Neodymium is a ferromagnetic metal with a Curie temperature of -254 degrees celcius. This means that it is only magnetic at extremely low temperatures, however, compounds of Neodymium can be created with transition metals like iron and these compounds have Curie temperatures higher than room temperature, these compounds are what Neodymium magnets are made out of. The strength of Neodymium magnets is due to a few factors. A crystal of the compound preferentially magnetises along a specific crystal axis, but it is incredibly difficult to magnetise in other directions. Unpaired electrons in a magnet, which are aligned in the same direction generate the magnetic field. Because the Neodymium compound Nd2Fe14B has more unpaired electrons it has a high saturation magnetisation. In 1982 General Motors and Sumitomo Special Metals both discovered the Nd2Fe14B compound.
